10th Air Force “Power and Vigilance Award”

The Fort Worth Airpower Council has donated a unique bronze statue, created by former FWAPC Chairman, Roger Latham, to the 10th Air Force. This trophy will be awarded annually to the most outstanding unit within the 10th Air Force.

The award will be on permanent display at 10th A.F. HQ at NAS/JRB. Each year the winning unit will have their units name inscribed on the award. This year the 477th Fighter Group from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska was selected as ”the best in the 10th Air Force.” The unit was recognized for their aggressive approach to Total Force Integration with their active duty counterparts in the 3rd Wing at Elmendorf. Reserve Airmen from the 477th filled key positions in the active duty structure, planned F-22 deployments and participated in multiple intercepts of Russian bomber aircraft.

The 477th draws its history from the 477th Bombardment, active in World War II, and was made up of African-American servicemen known as the “Tuskegee Airmen.”

The statue depicts the famous cowboy, Bill Pickett, wrestling, or otherwise known as bulldogging, a steer to the ground. Bill Pickett was the first African-American cowboy to be inducted into the National Rodeo hall of Fame.” A replica of is located in Fort Worth, Texas, Stockyards’ District.
